It’s My Birthday… And I Bought Myself A Milkshake!

I turned 29 years old today. Can y’all believe that? I feel so old. I’m almost 30! Whaaaat?

Wanna know what I did? Woke up and went shopping. As if I don’t shop enough already, I used my birthday as an excuse to do more shopping.

I bought a pair of jeans at T.J. Maxx. Really, I love that store. I could live in it. I’d be quite content there.

I’m kind of funny about my jeans. So it was a stroke of luck, or rather, a blessing from above, take it how you will, that I found them. I don’t really care for extra stretchy denim. I know most people love it. But I am just not one of those people. I prefer that tougher denim, the kind that was more popular back in the 90s, and has a little less stretch in it, a little less give until you wear them for a few hours. I don’t really know how to describe it. (Some author I am, right?) Maybe y’all know what I’m talking about, maybe y’all don’t, I don’t know.

Anyway, when I come across that kind of denim, in a pair of jeans that fit me just right, I snatch em up. More than one pair if I can. I found a pair about a month ago and I absolutely love them. But they only had the one pair. It’s a brand I wear a lot of, and the jeans are actually from like two seasons ago. 2018, I believe. So they aren’t just hanging out on the shelves everywhere. I’ve been popping into the store about once a week hoping to find more, but it’s been nothing but stretchy denim. A lot of new arrivals and stuff, but stretchy.

I was looking around today, and on a whim, because I rarely check out the clearance section. I probably should, that’s the smart thing to do, but I just never do. It’s no where near my section of clothing, so I just never think about it. Anyway, low and behold, but what did I find… one pair of the same exact jeans I bought a month ago. For… half the price!

Can you say Happy Birthday to me? I sho did!

That’s all I bought though. I looked at purses and kitchen stuff, but in the end I left with only the jeans.

I did go by the Cookout and get a chocolate syrup milkshake, which I’ve never had. It tasted like my childhood, by the way. Fitting, given it’s my birthday and all. It’s like when I was a kid and I’d ask my mom for a glass of chocolate milk with the Hershey’s syrup? It tasted just like that, in milkshake form. Delicious!

Also, a little tidbit completely irrelevant to the rest of this post, I worked yesterday, and we have gone from 30,000 words to 35,000 on novel number three! (For anyone curious, that’s a total of about 140 actual book pages.) Woo-hoo! Progress! (Don’t remind me that I’ve still got 50,000 words to go, just don’t remind me.)

Will see y’all later!

Book Updates! Sweetgum Valley Series

I think I’m going to try and finish making my book cover this week. I think.

I’ve also been contemplating a title change for the first book. I haven’t found anything else that fits though, so we’ll see how that goes. Maybe. It’s a maybe.

This past week I worked on an out of order edit, (still working on it ) meaning I’m jumping around randomly, editing chapters out of order. It helps because I tend to stay focused on just the chapter in front of me, rather than the book as a whole. A line by line, paragraph by paragraph look at it.

Book 2. It’s hanging out in ‘haven’t touched it in weeks, still requires multiple edits’ land. It’s only had one so far, and that’s not nearly enough.

In between stuff for the other books, I’m writing book 3. It’s at 30,000 words, roughly 1/3 of the way there.

I have a million other things to do as well, but my primary goals for the moment are to completely finish edits on book 1, format it, finish the cover, and write book 3.

I plan to publish the first book around late spring, early summer. And the second around late fall, early winter. We will see if I manage to keep this timeline. I’m sure going to try though. 😊

— Somewhere in there before I publish, I’ll start working on sending out monthly newsletters. It’s not as high up on the priority chain as getting book 1 complete. It’s coming though! —

Just thought I’d share a quick update.

It’s The End Of The World… Sort Of.

Sometimes I have these wild, vivid dreams. They’re totally out in left field, with a movie-like quality. They’re also wildly entertaining.

Here’s one from the other night…

It was the end of the world. Or something like that. Some catastrophic event that killed millions of people and sent the rest of us fleeing for our lives. The sky looked like it was burning. A pink haze hung in the air. No idea what had happened. But I ended up with a group of people, several of which in that party I didn’t trust. And I had good reason, apparently. Because the middle-aged, balding, short, stout man in charge was sneaking off to the Krystal’s down the street somewhere, stealing all the little burgers for himself, refusing to share any with the rest of us! He was also wearing his Krystal’s work shirt. He was manager or something like that. He was hiding them in a fridge in an old barn. Him and some accomplice. Anyway, we made him share. It was that or he was on his own. He chose sharing, of course.

Then we set off on foot through a jungle. Now why there was a Krystal’s near a jungle… I do not know! Dream Heather can’t explain any of that. Anyway, fast forward, we’re in a tree house of some sort, staring out at the the weird, pink, scary sky, and somehow, no idea how, I had a daughter. A little blonde-haired girl who wouldn’t let go of me. Now I didn’t have a daughter when the Krystal fiasco went down, so I don’t know how that came to be. Maybe I had her stashed away somewhere. I don’t know. But she was there and she was mine.

Then this gorgeous, dark haired, muscled, greek-like God of a man, with no shirt on, came up in the tree house… And looked right at me. Uh-oh.

With panther-like precision he made his way over to us. Me and my daughter. His name was Gabriel and he turned out to be her father!! 😯 (Dream Heather and reality Heather collided here, cause I thought, don’t I have a husband somewhere, and looked out over the railing of the treehouse. I decided he must not exist here and turned back to my handsome dream man. — Don’t judge me. He was dream Heather’s baby daddy after all! 😂)

Then we all argued, the whole party, about which way to go, before deciding to split up. We decended the stairs of the tree house and went out into the pink, foggy forest…..

And then I woke up!

I don’t know where these things come from. 😂 But they are entertaining to say the least.

Just Another Day …

Today, Tuesday (when I’m writing this), was a typical day in the life.

I worked, I did laundry, I cleaned the kitchen, I watched a little bit of tv, and that literally sums it up.

To add to that, I brought the plants in, so they don’t get frosted on. I put out more birdseed. Even opened up a window so the dog could watch the birds and squirrels outside. She loves that. ❤️

That’s literally it. I didn’t workout or cook anything. It was an off day for exercise, I had leftover enchiladas for lunch (that I made last night) and we had takeout for dinner.

All in all, it was a good day. See y’all later!

Wild, Riveting Content…

I know you came here for the riveting content I consistently put out. Well, you’re in luck, have I got some for you!

My Saturday went like this… I woke up. Late. On purpose. What can I say? I like to sleep in. I watched tv. I whipped up some homemade peanut butter cookies. Wasted time on the internet. Let the dog out, then made her come back in because she was barking at the neighbors all rude-like. We taught her manners, she’s just… ya know… stubborn. I watched more tv. I worked out. I watched some YouTube videos. I made grits and eggs for dinner. Wasted a little more time on the internet. Then, and only then, did I pop open my computer to get some work done. That was two hours ago. So I’ve spent roughly two hours writing, while only eating one peanut butter cookie during that time, and taking only this one break right now, where I’m typing up this nice, fancy blog post.

Nice, huh?

If you’re disappointed, well, clearly you didn’t know this was what my riveting content consists of. I guess I could have tried to hype it a little. Tell you that I watched a documentary about a whole pirate island that sank to the bottom of the ocean! Or that our outdoor critters ate all the corn off their little corncobs today! That’s right, that happened. Oh, and if you want a really interesting tidbit, I washed the dishes after baking cookies instead of letting them sit in the sink! (gasp!!)

This, folks, is my glamours life. 😉

Now I’m going to do some more fascinating things… Like more work, take a shower, watch more tv, go to sleep. Stuff like that. 😘 — See y’all later!

Post-Workout Ramblings…

I just finished a nice, vigorous workout. That’s always fun. I’m hot. A little sweaty. (Okay, a lot sweaty.) My hair is up but messy and falling down all over the place. I need to jump in the shower. I also need to toss a load of laundry in the wash. Not at the same time, though. After the shower. Or I could reverse that. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.

I wrote for a few hours today, which really wasn’t enough. I read a book most of the morning and into the early afternoon, then I started working. (I’m bad… I know. 😉) My husband is bringing home take-out though. Which means I don’t have to cook anything, and I’ll probably work for several more hours tonight.

While I was working out I was thinking about how much stuff I have to do. Work-related, not regular-everyday-life related.

It’s a lot and overwhelming when I end up thinking about all of it at once. Which I shouldn’t do, but still catch myself doing every now and again. (Hey, I’m only human! 😂) It’s okay though; we’ll get it. I always say we, because it’s never just me. And between God, myself, my husband, and everyone else who supports me… we’ll get it. (Might take a minute, but we’ll get it! 😉)

I’m off to take care of the shower and the laundry now. See y’all tomorrow!

Just Another Tuesday!

I need to grab some lunch, go to the grocery store, come back home and work, exercise, cook dinner, then whatever it is I choose to do until I go to sleep.

Those are my Tuesday plans. It’s late morning now, and I’m about to get the ball rolling.

It’s cold out today! A high of 45 and low of 28. Now for some of you, I’m sure you’re thinking, Heather… that’s not cold. Well, it is for Coastal Georgia! It gets below freezing maybe 10,11 or so nights a year. Seriously, that’s cold! — Of course, I like cold weather, so I’m not complaining, just saying. It’s a bright and sunny day, too. (Insert thumbs up here!)

I’m going to change clothes, take the dog out, feed the birds, then hit the road. See you all tomorrow!

I’m Tired, But I’m Here… And I’m Singing!

Ever have one of those moments where you want to do a bunch of stuff, but you’re so tired you know you’ll only end up with pitiful results, and so you might as well not bother? — Yeah. That’s me tonight.

I want to write (specifically on my novel), but I know it’ll be one gigantic mess that needs a lot of editing later. And I mean, a lot! I tried to read, but I wasn’t processing anything I was reading. I’d get a couple paragraphs down and realize I had no idea what I just read. I was going to catch up on Chicago Fire, I’m several episodes behind, but all that action, drama, and adrenaline rushing that goes on with them, well… it needs a certain amount of focus from me, which I’m not sure I’m capable of right now. — I’m that kind of tired. I can’t even watch dramatic tv!

I think I’m going to pick an animated movie, or a 90s sitcom, something that doesn’t require a whole lot of thinking. Then I’m going to drift off to sleep, and tomorrow I’ll do all those things I’m itching to do.

Sounds like a solid plan to me. (But of course it does, it’s my plan! 😂)

I did manage this blog post though, so I’m feeling rather productive right now. Don’t get it twisted, this is all I’m capable of. I know you’re probably thinking, if you can do this Heather, you can do all the other stuff.

No, no. No, I can’t. I’m half asleep and give slap out. It’s been a long week, a lot of late nights, busy days, and early mornings. This one blog post, it’s all I have to give… (If you’re a 90s kid, and you didn’t just sing… but my love is alllllll I haaave to giiiive, without you I don’t think Iiii could liiiive, I wish I could giiiive the wooorld to youuu, but love is all I haaave to giiiive… I’m a little disappointed in you. 😂)

Double thumbs up to me for actually getting something accomplished, though! (This blog post!)

See you tomorrow! – Heather. ❤️

Care For A Beer?

The wind whistled around the old, rickety house. Boards creaked underneath his feet, and a draft stole through the room, sending shivers up his spine. Turning his head, he glanced out the window, where he saw nothing but darkness. Night had descended hours ago, and shadows danced along the walls, one lone lit candle giving light to the room.

Rain beat down on the old tin roof, rusted with age. The house had been in his family for years, built by his grandfather decades ago. He hated to think what would happen, should it be lost to him this night.

A door opened, then closed. He turned, facing the direction the sound had come from. He should be alone. No one else should be in the house. He’d made certain of it. Danger was too close, lurking only miles offshore.

The eerie sound of screaming wind whipped around the house again. He ignored it, his eyes on the entrance to the room. Perhaps his mind had been playing tricks on him, and no door had opened at all.

As much as he wished it to be true, that was not the case, for only moments later, his brother materialized in the doorway. I’ll kill him, he thought, before realizing they might both be dead before the end of the night.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. Angry as he was, the words came out sharp and rough.

“What’s it look like I’m doing?” His brother took several steps forward, before leaning lazily against the wall.

“It looks like you’re trying to get yourself killed.”

“Looks like we’re in the same boat then.”

“Yeah, and it’s sinking,” he bit out, his anger rising. His brother was too casual, too unaffected by the danger closing in on them.

“You should have known I wouldn’t go.” They stared each other down. “You need me.”

“I can handle this myself.”

“There’s 800 head of cattle out there. Are you crazy?”

“Mom–“

“Mom knows where I’m at,” his brother argued.

“You’re determined to do this then?” he asked, the fight going out in him. “Despite the risks?” It was too late to turn back anyway.

“We’re brothers. You’re here, I’m here.”

“You do realize there’s a category four hurricane barreling right for us?”

His brother’s smile was grim. “All too well.”

He nodded. “Alright then. Care for a beer?”

— I found a writing prompt that said write a scene that ends with this sentence: (And then it listed a sentence and I decided I didn’t like that sentence and picked something super random on my own. — Care for a beer? — So, this is what we got! I wrote this in less than 30 minutes, so if it’s the worst thing you’ve ever read…. cut me a little slack. 😉 —
